Chappell Roan Severs Ties with Wasserman Talent Agency Following Epstein-Maxwell Email Revelations
Grammy-winning artist Chappell Roan has publicly announced her immediate departure from Wasserman talent agency, citing profound ethical concerns after founder Casey Wasserman's personal emails to convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell were disclosed. The 27-year-old singer declared her decision via Instagram Stories on Monday, emphasising her commitment to moral integrity within the entertainment industry.
Roan's Statement: A Stand for Ethical Representation
"As of today, I am no longer represented by Wasserman, the talent agency led by Casey Wasserman," Roan stated unequivocally. "I hold my teams to the highest standards and have a duty to protect them as well. No artist, agent or employee should ever be expected to defend or overlook actions that conflict deeply with our own moral values."
The singer expressed respect for the agency's hardworking staff while maintaining her position: "I have deep respect and appreciation for the agents and staff who work tirelessly for their artists and I refuse to passively stand by." Roan concluded her statement by asserting that "artists deserve representation that aligns with their values and supports their safety and dignity" and that "meaningful change in our industry requires accountability and leadership that earns trust."
The Controversial Email Correspondence
The decision follows the Department of Justice's release last month of a substantial cache of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, which included 2003 email exchanges between Wasserman and Maxwell. In these communications, the Hollywood mogul and Los Angeles 2028 Olympics chair engaged in highly flirtatious dialogue with Maxwell, who is currently imprisoned for grooming, trafficking, and abusing minors alongside Epstein.
In one April 2003 email, Wasserman wrote to Maxwell: "Where are you, I miss you. I will be in NYC for 4 days starting april 22… can we book that massage now?" Maxwell responded provocatively: "all that rubbing - are you sure you can take it? There are a few spots that apparently drive a man wild - I suppose I could practise them on you and you could let me know if they work or not?"
Further exchanges revealed Maxwell suggesting "float naked down the beach" during Los Angeles's foggy weather and Wasserman replying to her Paris trip inquiry with "The only thing that i want from paris is you." These communications occurred while Wasserman's then-wife, Laura Ziffren, was eight months pregnant with their son.
Wasserman's Response and Broader Context
Casey Wasserman, 51, issued a statement to the Daily Mail expressing regret: "I deeply regret my correspondence with Ghislaine Maxwell, which took place over two decades ago, long before her horrific crimes came to light. I never had a personal or business relationship with Jeffrey Epstein. As is well documented, I went on a humanitarian trip as part of a delegation with the Clinton Foundation in 2002 on the Epstein plane. I am terribly sorry for having any association with either of them."
Wasserman's professional stature remains considerable as head of one of Hollywood's premier talent agencies, representing major acts including Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, and Billie Eilish. He also chairs the LA28 Olympic Committee and recently hosted a star-studded 50th birthday celebration attended by political luminaries including former President Bill Clinton and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
However, the email scandal compounds existing controversies surrounding Wasserman's personal conduct. In 2024, eleven sources provided information to the Daily Mail alleging multiple romantic affairs with employees throughout his marriage, though Wasserman dismissed these claims as gossip. The Daily Mail has also obtained an undated photograph showing Wasserman with Epstein and Maxwell beside a private aircraft.
Flight logs confirm Wasserman and his then-wife traveled with Epstein, Bill Clinton, actor Kevin Spacey, and comedian Chris Tucker to Africa for an HIV charity event in 2002. Authorities have not suggested Wasserman participated in any criminal activities related to Epstein's trafficking operations.
Roan's decisive action represents a significant public challenge to industry norms regarding accountability and ethical representation. The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Roan and Wasserman for further comment regarding this developing situation.
