Sarah Michelle Gellar has announced that the planned reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer has been scrapped. The streaming platform Hulu decided not to proceed with the sequel series, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale.
Gellar, 48, shared the news in an Instagram video, expressing her disappointment. 'Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy New Sunnydale,' she said. The actress thanked Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, who was attached to helm the project, for reminding her of her love for the character.
The reboot was first reported last year, with Gellar set to reprise her role as Buffy Summers. Zhao, known for directing Nomadland and Eternals, was to direct the series. However, Hulu ultimately opted not to greenlight the project.
The original series ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, following Buffy as she balanced high school life with battling vampires and demons. The show starred Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, and the late Michelle Trachtenberg.
