Bad Bunny Takes Leading Role in Residente's Directorial Debut 'PORTO RICO'

Puerto Rican musical icons Residente and Bad Bunny are uniting for a groundbreaking cinematic project that explores their homeland's complex history through an original historical drama. The film, titled "PORTO RICO", marks the directorial debut of René Pérez Joglar, the Grammy-winning artist known professionally as Residente.

Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

Bad Bunny, born Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, will headline the film's cast in his first leading role, following recent supporting appearances in movies like "Happy Gilmore 2" and "Caught Stealing". The ensemble includes acclaimed actors Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem, and Edward Norton, who is also serving as a producer.

Residente co-wrote the screenplay with Alexander Dinelaris, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind "Birdman". The project boasts significant backing from executive producer Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker, and support from Live Nation Entertainment.

A Personal and Epic Vision

In a statement, Residente expressed his lifelong ambition to create a film about Puerto Rico, noting that its true history has often been shrouded in controversy. "This film is a reaffirmation of who we are — told with the intensity and honesty that our history deserves," he said.

The movie is described as an "epic Caribbean Western and historical drama" inspired by real events, aiming to blend visceral drama with a critical examination of historical narratives.

Industry Endorsements and Cultural Significance

Edward Norton praised the project, comparing it to classics like "The Godfather" and "Gangs of New York" for its ability to entertain while confronting underlying historical truths. "Everybody knows what a poet of language and rhythm René is. Now they're going to see what a visual visionary he is as well," Norton added.

This collaboration follows Bad Bunny's recent historic Super Bowl halftime performance, which prominently featured Puerto Rican culture and history, further highlighting the artists' commitment to their roots.

No specific details have been released regarding the filming schedule or release date for "PORTO RICO", but anticipation is building for this unique fusion of musical talent and cinematic storytelling.
