The images, captured over several days in February, reveal a substantial increase in support aircraft, including vital refuelling tankers, at the Prince Sultan Airbase—a facility that has hosted American forces for many decades.

A detailed analysis of high-resolution satellite photographs shows a marked rise in the number of aircraft present at the base. On February 17th, imagery indicated 27 aircraft were visible. However, by February 21st, that number had jumped significantly to at least 43 aircraft, before slightly decreasing to 38 by February 25th. This fluctuation occurred over a concentrated four-day window, aligning with broader US military movements in the region.
Specific Aircraft Identified
Forensic imagery analyst William Goodhind of Contested Ground provided specific details to Reuters regarding the aircraft observed. The image from February 21st displayed 13 Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker refuelling aircraft and six Boeing E-3 Sentry AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) planes. These were among a total of 29 large, swept-wing aircraft parked at the base. In contrast, the earlier February 17th image showed only 11 such large aircraft, according to Reuters' own assessment.

This military buildup unfolds against a complex diplomatic backdrop. Saudi Arabia, a longstanding US ally, reportedly informed Iran last month that it would not permit its airspace or territory to be used for any military actions against Tehran. Simultaneously, indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran regarding Iran's nuclear programme have been ongoing, with Oman acting as a mediator.
Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi stated recently that while progress was made in talks, no major breakthrough has been achieved that could definitively avert potential US strikes. He indicated that negotiations are set to resume after consultations in respective capitals, with technical-level discussions scheduled for the coming week in Vienna.

When approached for comment, the Pentagon declined to provide any information, stating it had "nothing to provide." This is consistent with standard US military policy of not commenting on specific force movements. The Saudi government's media office also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Adding to the tense atmosphere, US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Iran on February 19th, stating the country must reach a deal within 10 to 15 days or face "really bad things."
