American military forces have successfully targeted and killed a senior Al-Qaeda-linked figure in northwest Syria, in a direct response to a previous assault that claimed the lives of two US service members and a civilian interpreter.
Retaliatory Strike Targets Key Militant
The individual eliminated in the precision airstrike was identified as Bilal Hasan al-Jasim. US Central Command described him as an "experienced" leader within the terrorist network and stated he was "directly connected" to the hostile action on 13 December.
This operation marks the third set of retaliatory measures undertaken by the United States following the tragic incident last month. The military's statement emphasised that the action demonstrates a continued resolve to hold accountable those who threaten American forces and personnel.
Operation Hawkeye Strike's Broader Campaign
The specific strike that killed al-Jasim forms part of a larger, ongoing offensive named Operation Hawkeye Strike. This wider campaign has seen US and allied partner forces conduct a significant number of attacks against ISIS infrastructure.
To date, the operation has successfully struck over 100 ISIS targets, including weapons storage sites and other critical facilities used by the militant group.
