American military forces have captured another oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea, marking a significant escalation in the Trump administration's campaign to exert control over Venezuela's vital petroleum resources.
Operation Against the Motor Tanker Veronica
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the seizure of the Motor Tanker Veronica on Thursday, 15 January 2026. In a social media statement, she claimed the vessel had "previously passed through Venezuelan waters" and was operating in defiance of a US-imposed quarantine on sanctioned ships in the region.
The operation was conducted by a US Coast Guard tactical team, supported by Marines and sailors launched from the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford. Noem shared a brief, grainy video showing helicopters hovering over a merchant ship's deck as armed troops fast-roped down to board it.
A Pattern of Enforcement and Economic Ambition
This seizure represents the sixth tanker taken by US forces as part of President Trump's drive to dominate the production, refining, and global distribution of Venezuelan oil. It is the fourth such capture since the US ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in a surprise night-time raid nearly two weeks ago.
Secretary Noem framed the action as a lawful enforcement measure, stating it was carried out with "close coordination" with the military, State, and Justice Departments. "Our heroic Coast Guard men and women once again ensured a flawlessly executed operation, in accordance with international law," she asserted, adding that the captures prove "there is no outrunning or escaping American justice."
The Broader Goal: Rebuilding Venezuela's Oil Industry
However, other officials within the administration have been more explicit about the economic motives behind these maritime interventions. The actions are seen as a key revenue-generating strategy to support a vast plan to rebuild Venezuela's shattered oil infrastructure and restore its economy.
Last week, Donald Trump met with oil company executives to discuss an ambitious goal of investing $100 billion into Venezuela. The administration has stated it expects to sell between 30 million and 50 million barrels of previously sanctioned Venezuelan oil on the global market, with the proceeds funding the nation's industrial revival.
The seizure of the Veronica underscores the twin-track US approach: a robust military and law enforcement posture in the Caribbean Sea, working in tandem with a high-stakes economic strategy aimed at wholly restructuring Venezuela's primary industry.
