In a bold and long-range operation, Ukrainian forces have successfully targeted one of Vladimir Putin's most sensitive military installations deep inside Russian territory.
Pre-emptive Strike on a Critical Testing Site
The attack, which took place on 18 January 2026, saw drones strike the 4th State Central Inter-Service Test Range at Kapustin Yar in the Astrakhan Region. This remote site, situated near the border with Kazakhstan, is a pivotal hub for developing and testing advanced Russian weaponry.
Military sources confirm the drones travelled an impressive distance of around 500 miles to reach their target, successfully evading Russian air defence systems. The strike reportedly hit a key assembly and testing building at the secretive complex.
Targeting the 'Unstoppable' Oreshnik Missile
The daring raid was a pre-emptive move aimed squarely at disrupting Russia's testing and deployment of its new 'Oreshnik' missile system. This weapon has been touted by Russian military sources as a nuclear-capable 'super-weapon', capable of travelling at speeds of up to 8,000mph.
Specialist military outlet Militarnyi first revealed details of the attack. The strike comes at a critical juncture, as Western intelligence sources warned that Putin was poised to launch a major new assault on Ukraine within days, potentially involving these advanced weapons.
A Major Blow to Russian Military Plans
This operation represents a significant escalation in Ukraine's capability to project force and conduct deep-strike missions against high-value strategic targets inside Russia. Successfully hitting such a secure facility demonstrates a serious vulnerability in Russian air defences and deals a substantial blow to Moscow's weapons development timeline.
The attack on Kapustin Yar, a location synonymous with Soviet and Russian missile testing since the Cold War, underscores Ukraine's determination to degrade Putin's military capacity at its source, rather than solely defending against attacks on its own soil.
