Former President Donald Trump has announced a significant new agreement that will grant the United States "total access" to Greenland through a deal negotiated with NATO members.
Davos Announcement on Strategic Access
Trump made the declaration during an interview with Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Thursday morning. He emphasised that the arrangement provides comprehensive military access to the strategically important Arctic territory.
Unlimited Military Access and Missile Defense Plans
"Essentially, it provides full access," Trump stated, clarifying that there would be "no end" and "no time limit" to the agreement. He further revealed that a portion of America's "Golden Dome" missile defense system would be constructed in Greenland as part of the security framework.
The former president was unequivocal about the terms: "I'm not gonna have to pay anything. We're gonna have total access to Greenland. We're gonna have all military access that we want. We're going to be able to put what we need on Greenland because we want it."
National Security Justification
Trump framed the agreement as essential for both American and international security. "We're talking about national security and international security," he told Bartiromo, insisting that the United States requires the territory for defensive purposes.
While discussions with NATO remain at a preliminary stage, and the precise terms of any final agreement have not been fully disclosed, Trump's announcement signals a potentially major shift in Arctic military strategy and NATO cooperation.
