Met Office Extends Rain Warning Across Scotland Amid Flood Alerts
The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for persistent and heavy rain to include additional areas of Scotland, with flood alerts now in force across several regions. The adverse weather conditions, which began on Tuesday morning, are expected to continue through Wednesday, potentially affecting homes, businesses, and travel networks.
Expanded Warning Areas and Timing
The initial warning, covering Perth, Dundee, and parts of Aberdeenshire, has been broadened to include parts of Ayrshire and Arran, sections of Inverclyde such as Greenock, and areas of Argyll and Bute, narrowly missing Inveraray. This yellow warning commenced at 9am on Tuesday and remains active until 11.59pm on Wednesday, highlighting the prolonged nature of the rainfall.
Expected Rainfall and Snowfall
According to the Met Office, persistent and at times heavy rain will fall onto already saturated ground, likely causing further disruption and localised flooding. Widespread rainfall of 15 to 30mm is anticipated, with 40-60mm possible over higher ground. Additionally, snow is expected on some higher roads by the end of Tuesday, particularly in Aberdeenshire, and may persist on elevated terrain into Wednesday, with a further 30mm of rain possible on lower ground.
Potential Impacts and Disruptions
Drivers have been warned to expect difficult conditions and possible road closures in the affected regions. The Met Office has indicated a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded or communities cut off due to the severe weather. Ferry operator CalMac has issued warnings on social media that some services may face cancellations or delays, advising travellers to check their journeys before departure.
Flood Alerts from Sepa
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has implemented four flood alerts covering Aberdeenshire and the city, Dundee and Angus, Fife, and Tayside. Within the Tayside region, Sepa has also issued two more severe flood alerts affecting Aberbothrie and the River Isla at Coupar Angus, underscoring the heightened risk in these areas.
This extended weather warning underscores the ongoing challenges posed by the inclement conditions, with authorities urging vigilance and preparedness among residents and travellers across Scotland.
