In a significant move to bolster regional security, Romania's parliament has formally approved the deployment of German Patriot air defence systems on its territory. The decision comes as NATO continues to reinforce its eastern flank in response to ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Strategic Defence Enhancement
The approval, granted on Tuesday, allows for the stationing of advanced German Patriot missile systems across multiple Romanian locations. This deployment represents a crucial enhancement to the country's air defence capabilities and demonstrates strengthened cooperation between NATO allies.
Parliamentary Support and Regional Security
Romanian lawmakers overwhelmingly backed the initiative, with 264 votes in favour and only 35 against. Defence Minister Angel Tîlvăr emphasised that this deployment "contributes to increasing the defence and deterrence capacity on the eastern flank, in the current context of the security situation generated by the war in Ukraine."
NATO's Eastern Flank Reinforcement
The decision forms part of broader NATO efforts to strengthen defensive positions along the alliance's eastern borders. Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, member states have significantly increased military presence and coordination in the region.

Germany has maintained a continuous rotational presence of Patriot systems in Romania since 2021. The current parliamentary approval extends and formalises this arrangement, ensuring continued protection for NATO territory and infrastructure.
