In a stunning blow to Vladimir Putin's military prestige, the commander of Russia's beleaguered Black Sea Fleet has been abruptly dismissed following a string of catastrophic losses inflicted by Ukrainian sea drones.
Admiral Viktor Sokolov has been officially removed from his post, according to a decree signed by the Russian defence minister. This move confirms weeks of speculation that a major shake-up was underway after Ukraine's daring attacks crippled Russian naval operations in the strategically vital region.
A Fleet on the Run
The Black Sea Fleet, once a symbol of Russian military might, has been forced into a humiliating retreat. Ukrainian intelligence reports that a staggering a third of Russia's warships in the Black Sea have been sunk or severely damaged. In a desperate bid for survival, the Kremlin has ordered the bulk of its remaining vessels to relocate to the port of Novorossiysk, further east on the Russian coast.
