UK Navy Crew Member Missing After Distress Call Off Irish Coast
Missing UK Navy Crew Member Search Ends

The search for a missing UK Navy crew member in the waters off the north-west coast of Ireland has been called off, with the individual not found, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

Extensive Search Operation Launched

The crew member from the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessel Tidesurge was last seen on board at approximately 10.30pm on Friday. The incident prompted a large-scale, multi-agency search operation across a significant area of sea between Tory Island in County Donegal and Eagle Island in County Mayo.

The alarm was raised when the Irish Coast Guard received a distress call from the UK naval support vessel before 9am on Saturday morning. The search and rescue mission was launched immediately after the serviceperson was declared missing.

Multi-Agency Response and Conclusion

The complex operation involved assets from the Irish Coast Guard, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force, RNLI, and other Irish authorities, all coordinated by the Irish Coast Guard's maritime rescue sub-centre in Malin.

Air support included the Coast Guard's fixed-wing plane Rescue 120F from Shannon Airport, the Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 118 based in Sligo, and the Irish Air Corps plane, CASA 284. At sea, the search was coordinated by the UK naval support vessel itself and three RNLI all-weather lifeboats from Ballyglass, Arranmore Island, and Lough Swilly.

Despite these extensive efforts, the Ministry of Defence announced that the search has now ended and the crew member has not been located.

Official Statements and Investigation

On Sunday, Defence Secretary John Healey released a statement, saying: “After an extensive search, it is with deep sadness that we confirm the missing crew member of RFA Tidesurge has not been found.” He extended his thoughts to the family and fellow crew members and expressed gratitude to all the rescue services involved for their rapid and tireless response.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed that the missing crew member's family has been informed and has requested privacy during this tragic time. The spokesman also stated that an investigation into the incident is now underway and confirmed that no other individuals were harmed or reported missing.
