Ukraine faced one of the largest aerial bombardments of the war overnight, as Russian forces launched a massive assault involving more than 300 drones alongside a barrage of ballistic and cruise missiles.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the scale of the attack on Tuesday, 20 January 2026. He described a "significant" number of ballistic and cruise missiles being used in conjunction with the swarm of over 300 drones. The president revealed that a recent resupply of air defence missiles, received just a day prior, had been crucial in bolstering Ukraine's defences against the onslaught.
However, Zelenskiy issued a stark warning about the urgent need for further supplies to sustain the country's protective capabilities. This plea comes as Ukraine braces for what it anticipates will be new mass attacks from Russian forces.
Critical Infrastructure and Civilian Impact
The assault had severe consequences across the country. In the central Vinnytsia region, a critical infrastructure facility was struck, according to Governor Natalia Zabolotna. While she did not specify the exact nature of the facility on Telegram, she confirmed that no casualties resulted from this particular hit. The strike is of particular strategic concern as Vinnytsia is the headquarters of Ukraine's air force.
The capital, Kyiv, suffered significant disruption to civilian life. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that approximately 5,635 high-rise apartment buildings were left without heating as a direct result of the Russian attack. He added a devastating detail on Telegram: nearly 80% of these buildings were ones where heat supply was still being restored from a previous major attack on 9 January.
Ukraine's Evolving Air Defence Strategy
In response to the escalating threat, President Zelenskiy announced on Monday that Ukraine's armed forces are transforming their air defence system. A new facet is being introduced, involving small groups deploying interceptor drones. This innovative approach aims to create a more agile and layered defence network as the country prepares for continued large-scale aerial assaults.
