Trump Places 1,500 Paratroopers on Standby Amid Minneapolis ICE Protests
1,500 US Army Paratroopers on Standby for Minneapolis

The White House has taken a significant step towards a potential military intervention in Minneapolis, with President Donald Trump ordering more than 1,500 active-duty Army paratroopers to be placed on standby. This move comes as chaotic and sometimes violent protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continue to grip the city.

Military Readiness and Judicial Restraint

According to defence officials who spoke to ABC News on Saturday, the soldiers from the elite 11th Airborne Division, based in Alaska, are prepared for possible deployment. The administration has not yet made a final decision to send the troops, with one official stating they are "taking prudent steps to prepare active-duty Army forces" and "preparing options."

This military posture coincides with a landmark ruling from a federal district court. Judge Kate Menendez, a Biden appointee, has issued an order prohibiting ICE agents from retaliating against protesters. The ruling explicitly forbids agents from detaining or using tear gas against protestors or legal observers without reasonable suspicion of a crime or of obstructing officers.

The Spark: The Shooting of Renee Good

The protests were ignited by the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a US citizen and mother of three, by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7. Good was shot three times in the face while sitting in a car with her wife, where they were allegedly acting as legal witnesses to demonstrations. Judge Menendez's ruling also addresses this, stating that safely following agents "at an appropriate distance does not, by itself, create reasonable suspicion to justify a vehicle stop."

In recent days, scenes in parts of Minneapolis have resembled a conflict zone, with tear gas and violent clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement filling the streets. In response to the escalating situation, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has mobilised the state's National Guard to support patrols, though they have not yet been deployed.

A Multi-Agency Crackdown

The potential for a federal military deployment is not the only sign of a hardening stance from Washington. Reports indicate that the FBI has asked agents to volunteer for temporary duty in Minneapolis. FBI Director Kash Patel vowed on social media that his bureau was working to crack down on "violent rioters" and investigate their funding networks.

This unfolding crisis places ICE, an agency central to President Trump's immigration crackdown, under intense national scrutiny. The events in Minneapolis have sparked a fierce nationwide debate over the use of force by federal officers and the limits of protest in the face of government authority.
