Brits are gearing up for a summer of excess as scorching temperatures, alcohol-fuelled barbecues, and a jam-packed sporting calendar risk sending the nation's wellbeing into freefall, a leading nutritionist has cautioned.
Survey Reveals Indulgence Plans
A survey has found that two-thirds of Brits are planning on living it large this summer, with hot weather, boozy BBQs, and World Cup festivities set to take a serious toll on the nation's gut health. The research revealed that two-thirds of Brits are planning on going all out this summer, welcoming a season of feasting, drinking, and mingling.
Warm weather and summer getaways are fuelling the excess, alongside traditional seasonal treats like barbecue fare, coastal trips, and major sporting fixtures such as the World Cup. Four in ten say there is nothing better than sitting in the sunshine eating and drinking with friends, while more than half confess they consume more alcohol when it's warm and sunny.
Impact on Health
Some of the health risks of a heatwave include dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. In fact, Brits knock back 40% more alcohol units on average (14 units) on a sunny Saturday or Sunday, compared to a colder, greyer day. But specialists from Biotiful, who commissioned the research, caution the seasonal blow-out could exact a hefty toll on the nation's health.
Seven out of ten (70%) acknowledge their usual eating and fitness habits go out the window as soon as the sun emerges. Two thirds (66%) go even further, claiming they are at their most unhealthy during the summer compared to the remainder of the year, with gut health suffering considerably as two thirds (67%) acknowledge the shifts negatively impact it.
The research revealed that, on average, Brits consume nearly 400 additional calories on a weekend day during the summer - equivalent to a McDonald's double cheeseburger or two 45g bars of Dairy Milk chocolate. Overindulging on holiday (42%), the weather being too warm to exercise (38%), spending more time with friends (35%), consuming more ice cream and sweet treats (33%), being more tempted by convenience food (32%), and lacking motivation to cook (30%) were amongst the primary reasons healthy routines crumble during the summer period.
Summer Indulgences
Regarding summer indulgences, more than three quarters (78%) of Brits opt for ice cream. Meanwhile, barbecue essentials including burgers (59%) and sausages (48%) continue as popular choices, alongside ice lollies and crisps (both 46%). And the nation's preferred summer beverages present an equally decadent picture, with ice-cold pints (29%), chilled white wine (24%), rosé (17%), and Pimm's (14%) leading the way.
Almost half (46%) report experiencing more bloating, while 37% encounter stomach discomfort, 36% endure lower energy levels, and 30% battle with irregular digestion. Nutritionist Kristen Stavridis cautions that this summer presents ideal conditions for digestive problems. She explains: "Social Gut Lag is what happens when summer throws out your routine – late nights, al fresco drinks, spontaneous BBQs, and little sleep. Your gut, which thrives on rhythm and consistency, starts to feel the disorder first through bloating, sluggishness and your body pushing back."
"Summer is when habits loosen, and that's part of the fun but more alcohol, sugary snacks and ultra-processed foods can throw your gut bacteria out of balance. The result? Bloating, sluggishness and even dips in mood and immunity. But it's not all doom and gloom - you don't have to miss out. It's about striking the right balance, and small, simple swaps can genuinely lift how you feel from the inside out."
Expert Advice
Alessandra Zehnder at Biotiful Gut Health commented: "Summer should be about enjoyment – and that starts with how you feel on the inside. Biotiful Kefir is designed to fit into your life, whatever summer throws at it. Whether that's a big barbeque, late evenings, or a packed social calendar." Specialists at Biotiful have compiled The Summer Gut Survival Guide with five digestive health recommendations that complement your summer lifestyle, rather than restricting it.
- Make kefir part of your morning routine (particularly after a heavy night): A glass of kefir is brimming with live cultures that restore the beneficial bacteria that alcohol and broken sleep can strip away.
- Add fibre to every barbecue plate, such as corn on the cob or a spoonful of coleslaw. Fibre nourishes your good gut bacteria with essential nutrients to support its function.
- Embrace fermented foods. Fermented foods help maintain balance in your gut microbiome. Try a side of kimchi or sauerkraut alongside your barbecue spread, or swap a second beer for a kombucha.
- Protect your sleep: Gut health and sleep are deeply intertwined – poor sleep nudges you towards sugary, ultra-processed foods the next day. Take afternoon naps, or siesta like the Spanish do, and try to get a good night's sleep at least twice a week.
- Don't guilt trip yourself, instead focus on balance. If you've had a day of more indulgence, don't worry, come back to your kefir in the morning. The stress hormone cortisol can disrupt gut bacteria, so don't put more on yourself. Instead, focus on consistency and balance over perfection this summer.
