As temperatures soar, staying cool becomes a daily challenge. I have tested numerous portable fans and air coolers over the years, but Shark's new Chillpill stands out. Launched in March, this device is more than just a fan—it doubles as a cooling plate and fine mist spray.
Design and Features
The Chillpill boasts a unique design resembling compact binoculars, with two rounded barrels connected by a hinge. The smaller barrel houses controls and a charging port, while the larger one contains the motor and interchangeable attachments. A dial around the LED display allows you to adjust fan speed from one to ten. You can angle the fan as desired or twist it into a right angle for desk use, using the smaller barrel as a base. Shark also offers accessories like a crossbody strap (£9.99) for hands-free carrying.
Modular Attachment System
Unlike most handheld fans, the Chillpill uses a modular attachment system similar to Shark vacuums. It ships with a standard fan head, misting attachment, and cooling plate, allowing you to swap based on your cooling needs. The cooling plate is the most power-hungry, lasting about 1.5 hours per charge, while the fan and misting attachments provide up to 11 hours of battery life depending on speed settings.
Performance
The fan is powerful, thanks to Shark's airflow expertise, outperforming cheap handheld fans. It can get loud at higher speeds, but the trade-off is effective cooling. The misting attachment is a standout feature: fill it with cold water, attach it, and enjoy a fine spray combined with airflow. It feels like a cold shower for your face, providing refreshing relief even in 23°C heat. However, the misting releases the same amount of water regardless of fan speed, so it can drench you if left on continuously. You can switch between constant and intermittent modes to control this and save battery.
The cooling plate offers direct contact cooling. Once attached, you can choose between two settings, and the metal plate becomes noticeably cold. It is great for targeted relief on your neck or wrist, but unlike Sony's Reon Pocket Pro, you must hold it in place, making it less effective for hands-free use.
Should You Buy the Shark Chillpill?
At £130, the Chillpill is the most versatile handheld cooling device I have tested. The modular design gives it an edge over standard fans, and the misting feature is game-changing. The cooling plate's lack of hands-free operation and varying battery life are minor drawbacks. As an all-in-one summer device, the Shark Chillpill is hard to beat.
How I Tested
I tested the Chillpill at home and outdoors in 23°C, using all three modes: standard fan, misting spray, and cooling plate. I evaluated all ten fan speeds, both misting modes, and the cooling plate for targeted relief. I also assessed battery life, attachment swapping ease, and practicality for handheld and desk use.
