The RSPCA has issued a timely warning to dog owners as Britain prepares for a sweltering Bank Holiday weekend, with temperatures expected to exceed 30°C in nine regions from Friday to Monday (May 22-25). While many are aware of the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars or walking them on scorching pavements, the charity highlights another seasonal hazard: ticks.
What Are Ticks and When Are They Active?
Rebecca, the RSPCA's Head Vet, explained in a TikTok video that tick season typically runs from March to October. Ticks are spider-like parasites found in woodland, tall grass, and areas with wildlife and farm animals. They have eight legs and appear as reddish-brown, grey, or black bumps, with size depending on how much blood they have consumed.
How to Safely Remove a Tick
Rebecca advises pet owners not to panic if they find a tick. The key is to remove it quickly and safely to reduce the risk of Lyme disease transmission. She demonstrated using a twister tool: slide it close to the skin, twist in one direction to loosen the tick, and avoid squeezing the body or leaving the head embedded. If the pet shows signs of illness or skin irritation after removal, veterinary advice should be sought immediately.
Preventive Measures
To prevent future infestations, tick treatments that repel or kill ticks upon attachment are recommended. Owners should consult their vet for the best product for their pet.
Additional Heat Safety Tips
The RSPCA also reminds owners to provide constant access to shade and fresh, cold water. Other tips include walking dogs early or late in the day, avoiding running or cycling with them in heat, checking if destinations are dog-friendly, and testing pavement temperature with a hand for five seconds before walking.
