How Often to Wash Duvet Insert: Best Methods to Prevent Tears

Washing your duvet insert at least three times a year is essential for maintaining hygiene, preventing allergens, and avoiding tears, according to homeware retailer Bed Threads. The company's bedding guide recommends using a mild detergent and cold water to protect filling materials, though synthetic duvets may tolerate warm water. Always check the care label before washing.

How to Load the Washing Machine Properly

Bed Threads advises against washing duvet inserts with other items or using top-loader machines with a central spindle, as these can cause tangling or tearing. The guide states: "Duvet inserts made of synthetic materials can sometimes be washed with warm water. While these are general rules, always check the care instructions on the care tag before you wash a duvet."

Why Regular Washing Matters

Dr Lindsay Browning, a chartered psychologist and sleep expert, told BBC's Radio 1 Newsbeat that unwashed bedding can develop a "disgusting" smell and become clogged with sweat and dead skin cells. "You won't only be sleeping in the yuckiness of the sweat and dead skin cells, but the mites too," she said. Dust mites thrive on dead skin cells, potentially triggering allergies.

According to Bed Threads, washing your duvet insert helps "keep it free of odours and preventing allergens like mould or mildew from building up in the filling." The guide recommends washing at least three times a year to maintain a healthy, odour-free environment.

How Often to Wash Bedding

While duvet inserts require less frequent washing, bed sheets should be washed weekly or at least every two weeks, especially during summer. Dr Browning emphasised that a clean bedroom is a "sanctuary" for good sleep, adding: "If your sheets are not washed, and they look dirty, they smell, it's adding to that sensation that your bed isn't somewhere that you want to be."

Regular washing removes sweat, body oils, and dead skin cells that accumulate over time, reducing the risk of stains and allergen buildup. For best results, follow care instructions and avoid overloading the machine.
