Dermatologist Dr Samantha Ellis has warned that a common eyelash mistake could make women look older, sharing her advice "with love" in a social media video.
The mistake: thick, heavy, dense, super long eyelashes
Dr Ellis, a board-certified medical and cosmetic dermatologist, clinical instructor, and skincare founder, said that many people "mess up the most" with their eyelashes. She urged people to stop getting really "thick, heavy, dense, super long" eyelashes, describing the change as an "easy cosmetic fix" at "zero cost to you."
She explained she was not trying to be "mean," but sometimes if you don't "want to hear it, you need to hear it." In her video caption, she wrote: "Truly sharing this with love. Sometimes we get so used to certain cosmetic things on our face that we stop seeing them the way other people do. And sometimes, a little switch-up can make all the difference!"
Why these lashes can age you
Dr Ellis explained that heavy, dense lashes can give the appearance of "two sleepy eyes" because the weight makes eyelid muscles keep eyes "half open, half shut." She also said such lashes can make dark circles worse, as the dense, long lash creates a shadow on the under-eye area.
She added that these lashes can look "out of place" and disrupt facial harmony, noting that big, bold lashes may not balance with the rest of a person's features. However, she clarified she does not think "all fake lashes are bad," as some are "beautiful and natural" and complement the rest of the face.
A call to check the mirror
Dr Ellis said she believes many people are "walking around out there with eyelash blindness" and wanted them to "take a look in the mirror."
