A pharmacist has warned that three key symptoms of type 2 diabetes can appear first thing in the morning. Many people are unaware they have the condition, as symptoms can be subtle.
Morning Signs to Watch For
Abbas Kanani, a pharmacist at Chemist Click, highlighted three physical sensations that may point to type 2 diabetes upon waking: increased thirst, increased hunger, and frequent urination.
According to Diabetes.co.uk, polydipsia (excessive thirst) is one of the initial symptoms of diabetes. While occasional thirst is normal, persistent or intense thirst even after drinking fluids could be a warning sign.
Polyphagia (excessive hunger) is another primary indicator. The NHS explains that when the body struggles to use energy from food due to type 2 diabetes, it can lead to persistent hunger.
The third symptom, polyuria, involves needing to urinate more often than usual.
When to See a Doctor
The NHS advises contacting a GP as soon as possible if you notice any diabetes symptoms. A simple blood test can confirm the condition.
For those already diagnosed, Mr Kanani stressed the importance of breakfast for blood sugar control. He recommended eating within one to one-and-a-half hours after waking, as blood sugar levels are naturally high in the morning.
Other Common Symptoms
The NHS lists the most common type 2 diabetes symptoms as:
- Feeling very tired
- Peeing more than usual
- Feeling thirsty all the time
- Losing weight without trying
Additional symptoms may include blurred vision, slow-healing cuts, and itching around the genitals or recurring thrush. These symptoms can develop gradually and affect both adults and children.
