Congo's soccer federation is scrambling to secure an alternative venue for its World Cup warmup match against Chile after the mayor of La Linea de la Concepcion in Spain denied authorization for the game, citing health concerns linked to the ongoing Ebola crisis.
Federation in Talks
The Congolese federation confirmed it is in discussions with the Spanish soccer federation and relevant international bodies to find a solution. The match, originally scheduled for next Tuesday, was blocked by local government authorities in the southern Spanish city.
Ebola Outbreak
An outbreak of a rare strain of Ebola virus has affected both Congo and Uganda. The World Health Organization has designated it a public health emergency of international concern. Congo had already canceled a three-day World Cup training camp and a planned fan farewell in Kinshasa due to the outbreak in the eastern part of the country.
All Congolese players and their French coach, Sebastien Desabre, are based outside of the central African nation, with most playing in France.
FIFA Monitoring
FIFA, soccer's governing body, stated it is aware of the situation and is monitoring it closely. It is in constant communication with Congolese officials to ensure the team receives all necessary medical and security guidance.
World Cup Group K
Congo is set to compete in Group K at the World Cup, opening against Portugal in Houston on June 17. They will then face Colombia in Guadalajara on June 23 and conclude group play against Uzbekistan in Atlanta on June 27.
This marks Congo's first World Cup qualification since 1974, when the nation was known as Zaire. The qualification sparked widespread celebrations across the country, which has suffered decades of conflict.
