A 36-year-old mother of three died suddenly while taking her children to school, with her death later linked to a rare genetic condition that often goes undetected in women.
Carrie Pierce, a former McDonald's manager from Rochford, collapsed on the school run on 5 January 2026. Her husband Brad Pierce, an online manager, was told her heart had stopped. Medics tried to restart her heart for 40 minutes, but she died at the scene.
Family History of Heart Condition
Brad told creatorzine.com: "I thought Carrie was just stressed when I got the call to say she'd collapsed. When the medics told me her heart had stopped, I was speechless."
Carrie and Brad met at age 17. Early in their relationship, Carrie's father died in his 40s from an unexplained dissected aortic aneurysm, a tear in a weak spot in the main artery. The couple later married and had three children: Olivia, 14, Archie, 10, and Noah, six.
Son's Diagnosis Led to Screening
Noah, the youngest, had hearing problems, constant ear infections, a protruding chest, and long limbs. In October 2025, he was diagnosed with Marfan Syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting connective tissue. The name was familiar because the coroner had found Carrie's father had the same condition.
Only Carrie's brother was tested when they were growing up, as their mother was allegedly told the condition could only be passed to boys. After Noah's diagnosis, doctors suggested Carrie undergo screening, but this was put on hold due to other appointments related to her son's condition.
Post Mortem Revealed Loeys-Dietz Syndrome
Three weeks after her death, a post mortem confirmed the cause as a dissected aortic aneurysm, initially thought to be triggered by Marfan Syndrome. Genetic testing later revealed that Carrie and Noah were actually carriers of Loeys-Dietz Syndrome, a mutation of Marfan Syndrome.
Brad said: "I felt cheated. If she'd known as a teen that Marfan – or its mutations – could be passed onto girls, there could have been screening or even surgery."
Noah, aged five, phoned 999 and ran outside to flag down a passerby after Carrie stopped responding while they were playing Paw Patrol.
