Kristis Prior, a 34-year-old manager from Chelmsford, Essex, feared she would never become a mother after multiple IVF clinics turned her away due to her high body mass index (BMI) caused by Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS), formerly known as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). After struggling with weight loss methods such as Weight Watchers, Slimming World, and calorie counting, she turned to GLP-1 injections and lost enough weight to qualify for IVF. She became pregnant on her first attempt and gave birth to a son, Freddie, on October 14, 2025.
IVF Denied Due to High BMI
Kristis and her partner of nine years began exploring IVF options but were told her BMI of 38 exceeded the threshold of 34 required for treatment. Doctors explained that PMOS causes insulin resistance and elevated male hormones, making weight loss difficult. Other clinics gave similar advice, warning that conception was unlikely even without IVF. Determined, Kristis decided to try GLP-1 injections, despite initial skepticism.
Dramatic Weight Loss with GLP-1 Injections
Kristis started the injections and saw rapid results, losing four to six pounds per week. Within six months, her BMI dropped to 32—lower than the required 34. She went from 16 stone (224 lbs) and size 20/22 clothing to 11.5 stone (161 lbs) and size 12 jeans. Despite mild side effects like stomach pain, she felt significantly better and dropped three dress sizes.
Successful IVF and Pregnancy
After stopping the injections, Kristis returned to the IVF clinic, underwent tests, and became pregnant on her first cycle. She described the moment as "crazy" and "like a dream," adding that she still sometimes cannot believe she has a baby. Throughout her pregnancy, she worried something might go wrong, but on October 14, 2025, she gave birth to Freddie via planned C-section. She recalled the joy of seeing her son for the first time, saying, "It makes everything worth it."
Life as a New Mother
Now a mother to a nine-month-old, Kristis describes Freddie as "a very good baby" and says parenthood, though challenging, has been "the best year of my life." Despite criticism from some about using weight loss jabs, she defends her decision, stating, "Nothing worked for me. The injection changed my life." She has encouraged friends to try the medication, emphasizing that the outcome—her son—justifies the means.
Pharmacist’s Perspective
Dennis Ouko, Superintendent Pharmacist at Phlo Clinic where Kristis received her injections, noted the importance of stopping GLP-1 medication during IVF and pregnancy. He praised the life-changing impact of the drugs, saying, "It’s brilliant to see how GLP-1 medication has helped her along her fertility journey." Kristis has since restarted the injections to maintain her weight loss.
