The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is urging UK holidaymakers planning trips to Spain to begin their health preparations at least eight weeks before departure. Spain remains the most popular holiday destination for Britons, and the FCDO recommends checking vaccination advice well in advance.
Key Health Recommendations
Holidaymakers should visit the TravelHealthPro website for Spain-specific guidance. The FCDO states: “Travellers should be up to date with routine vaccination courses and boosters as recommended in the UK.” These include the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine and the diphtheria-tetanus-polio vaccine.
Visitors must also ensure their tetanus vaccinations are current. The guidance advises travellers to “thoroughly clean all wounds and seek medical attention for injuries such as animal bites or scratches, burns, or wounds contaminated with soil.”
Travel Insurance and Health Cards
Travel insurance remains essential for all Spain-bound holidaymakers. Additionally, an EHIC or GHIC card should be carried to access reduced-cost healthcare within the EU. However, officials warn that health cards are “not an alternative to travel insurance.”
The FCDO’s alert comes as part of its ongoing travel advice updates to ensure UK citizens are prepared for potential health risks abroad. For full details, holidaymakers are encouraged to consult the official FCDO travel pages.
