The NHS has issued guidance urging people to use an affordable product to alleviate irritating symptoms that millions of hay fever sufferers will face during the upcoming 'red alert' weekend. Applying Vaseline around the nostrils may provide relief as the Met Office forecasts 'very high' pollen alerts across the country.
Red Alert for Pollen
From Friday, June 19, a wave of 'red' pollen alerts will spread from isolated areas to cover almost all of England, as well as Wales and Northern Ireland. As pollen levels peak, people are advised to prepare by stocking up on medication and avoiding certain habits during the 'pollen bomb'.
Vaseline Technique
The NHS highlights a simple Vaseline technique in its online guidance. Applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly around the nostrils creates a sticky barrier that traps airborne pollen before it enters nasal passages, preventing allergic reactions. For best results, apply a light smear before going outdoors on high-pollen days. Reapply after blowing your nose or sneezing. Those with sensitive skin should use unscented petroleum jelly to avoid irritation.
Vaseline is available at Boots, Superdrug, and other retailers, starting from as little as £1.80 for a small container.
Additional NHS Advice
- Wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask, or a wide-brimmed hat to stop pollen from entering your nose and eyes.
- Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible.
- Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth.
- Use a pollen filter in your car's air vents and a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner.
The NHS also advises showering and changing clothes immediately upon arriving home to remove pollen from skin and scalp. Avoid baths, as water can trap pollen and redeposit it on your skin. Additionally, drying laundry outdoors can collect pollen on fabric fibers, aggravating hay fever symptoms even indoors.
