NHS Advises Using Vaseline for Hay Fever as Pollen Alerts Rise
NHS Advises Using Vaseline for Hay Fever Amid Pollen Alerts

The NHS has issued guidance advising people to apply Vaseline around their noses as a wave of Met Office 'Very High' pollen alerts spreads across the country. From Friday, June 19, the highest warning for pollen will cover almost all of England, as well as the entirety of Wales and Northern Ireland, triggering allergies for millions.

How Vaseline Helps

According to the NHS, applying a thin layer of petroleum jelly, such as Vaseline, around the nostrils creates a sticky barrier that traps airborne pollen before it enters nasal passages. This can prevent allergens from triggering a reaction. For best results, apply a light smear before going outdoors, especially on high-pollen-count days. Reapply after wiping your nose or sneezing, and use unscented petroleum jelly if you have sensitive skin.

Other NHS Recommendations

  • Wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask, or a wide-brimmed hat to keep pollen out of your nose and eyes.
  • Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible.
  • Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth.
  • Use a pollen filter in your car's air vents and a HEPA filter in your vacuum cleaner.
  • Shower and change clothes immediately after coming indoors to remove pollen from skin and clothing.
  • Avoid taking baths, as floating pollen can redeposit onto your skin.

Laundry Precautions

The NHS also warns against drying laundry outdoors during high pollen counts, as fabrics can trap pollen and bring it indoors, worsening symptoms even hours later.
