Flapjack bars recalled over undeclared allergens

A range of Full On Flapjacks products has been recalled because they contain undeclared allergens, including almonds (nuts), soya and wheat (gluten). The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a food recall notice advising customers to check whether they are affected.

The recall applies to England and Wales. The affected products are: Bakewell Flapjack, Raspberry Yoghurt Flapjack, White Chocolate Flapjack, Blueberry Swirl Flapjack and Caramel Flapjack. All pack sizes and all best-before dates are affected.

Health risk for allergy sufferers

The FSA said: "These products contain almonds, soya and wheat, making them a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to almonds (nuts) or soya, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat containing gluten, or with coeliac disease."

Customers who have bought any of the affected products and have an allergy to almonds, soya or wheat are advised not to eat them. Instead, they should return the products to the store where they were purchased for a full refund.

Company advice and contact

Full On Flapjacks said: "If you have bought any of the affected products listed above and you have an allergy to almond, soya or wheat, do not eat them. Instead, return the product to the store from which you purchased it for a full refund. For further information, please contact: migginshandbake@gmail.com."

The FSA added that the business has been advised to contact relevant allergy support organisations and has issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.

Previous snack bar recall

Last week, Skinny Crunch Light Peanut Butter Bars were recalled from Asda and Sainsbury's because they were packaged in Skinny Whip Toffee bar wrappers, which do not declare peanuts as an ingredient. This poses a potential health risk to anyone with a peanut allergy.

Halo Foods said: "Halo Foods apologises for any inconvenience caused and is taking this matter seriously, please note that no other Skinny products are affected by this action."

Why allergy alerts are issued

The FSA issues allergy alerts when there are problems with food items that should not be sold. It explained: "Then it might be 'withdrawn' (taken off the shelves) or 'recalled' (when customers are asked to return the product). Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk. When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert."
