Bryan Johnson, the 48-year-old biohacker known for his extreme longevity regimen involving 100 pills a day, has announced he has been diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease: autoimmune gastritis (AIG). In a social media post, he described the condition as his stomach "eating itself" and noted that 2 to 5 percent of the population may have it, often undiagnosed.
Diagnosis and Symptoms
Johnson explained that AIG is challenging to diagnose because it remains silent for years, only surfacing once the stomach has atrophied enough to cause damage. Symptoms include iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, anaemia, and an increased risk of stomach cancer over time. He had previously managed hypothyroidism, diagnosed at age 21, with daily supplements, unaware that his stomach was attacking itself.
Treatment and Outlook
Johnson has corrected his iron deficiency with a 1,000 mg Monoferric iron infusion. He criticised modern medicine for normalising conditions and focusing on management rather than cures. He stated: "In the age of AI, multiomics, and custom-built DNA, proteins, and cells, no condition should be presumed incurable simply because no one has yet tried to cure it with today's stack."
Personal Reflection
Johnson ended his post with a personal note: "We fill our days mostly on things that are trivial next to what we ultimately care about... health is easily forgotten until it’s the only thing that matters." He urged followers to care for themselves, others, the planet, and animal friends.
