The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has mandated a nationwide recall for a chocolate syrup product after laboratory tests revealed the presence of an undeclared pharmaceutical ingredient. Texas-based company Lockout Supplements initiated the recall for its "Boner Bears" chocolate syrup, which was found to contain sildenafil, the active component in the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra.
Health Risks of Undeclared Sildenafil
Sildenafil, when not listed on product labels, presents significant health dangers, particularly for individuals with pre-existing medical conditions. The ingredient can interact dangerously with nitrates commonly found in prescription drugs for heart disease or diabetes, potentially causing a severe drop in blood pressure to life-threatening levels. This recall highlights ongoing concerns about unregulated supplements and their potential to harm consumers who may be unaware of hidden ingredients.
Recall Details and Consumer Advice
The recall affects all lots of the 15-gram single-dose plastic tubes of chocolate syrup produced from January 1, 2025, to February 13, 2026. These products were sold exclusively through the Lockout Supplements website. Customers are strongly advised to:
- Immediately stop using the "Boner Bears" chocolate syrup.
- Consult a healthcare professional if they experience any adverse symptoms, such as dizziness or chest pain.
- Either dispose of the product safely or return it to the company for a full refund.
This incident underscores the importance of regulatory oversight in the supplement industry to prevent such hazardous occurrences.
