Olivia Tops Girls' Names for 10th Year; Muhammad Leads Boys

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released the most popular baby names for 2025 in England and Wales, with Olivia topping the girls' list for the tenth consecutive year. For boys, Muhammad, Noah, and Leo claimed the top three spots, with Leo overtaking Oliver compared to previous rankings.

Top Names for Girls and Boys

The top three girls' names were Olivia, Lily, and Amelia, with Lily moving up to second place, surpassing Amelia. Olivia was the most popular name in three of nine English regions and also topped the list in Wales. Muhammad was the most popular name in four of nine English regions but ranked 34th in Wales.

In 2025, there were 585,396 live births in England and Wales, comprising 284,681 females and 300,715 males. A total of 2,386 girls were named Olivia, and 5,957 boys were named Muhammad, representing 1.4% of all births.

New Entries and Rising Names

New additions to the top 100 names include Eliana, Gracie, Anaya, Alba, Marnie, Lilah, and Frankie for girls, and Vincent, Carter, Stanley, and Ruben for boys. The girls' names with the largest increases in popularity were Ada (up 54 places), Maeve (up 24), and Charlotte (up 24). For boys, Roman rose by 33 places, Harry by 26, and Finley by 25.

Names Dropping Out

Jessica fell by 44 places, Ellie by 31, and Amelia by 22, causing them to drop off the top 100 for girls. For boys, Bodhi fell by 18 places, Grayson by 14, and Brody by seven, removing them from the top 100.

The top 10 names accounted for 9.1% of all births in 2025. The ONS compiles the rankings based on the exact spelling of names at birth registration, with different spellings counted separately.
