WHO Declares Global Health Emergency Over Ebola in Congo and Uganda
WHO Declares Ebola Emergency in Congo and Uganda

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). This announcement comes after more than 300 suspected cases and 88 deaths have been reported across both nations.

WHO Director-General's Statement

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the declaration on Sunday, following the rapid spread of the virus. In a post on social media platform X, the WHO clarified that the outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, does not meet the criteria for a pandemic emergency similar to COVID-19. The organization also advised against the closure of international borders, emphasizing that such measures are not warranted at this time.

Case Numbers and Geographic Spread

Officials first reported the outbreak in Congo on Friday, with 65 deaths and 246 suspected cases. By Saturday, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) had recorded 336 suspected cases and 87 deaths. According to the WHO, Congo accounts for all but two of the cases, both of which were reported in neighboring Uganda.

Uganda confirmed its first case on Saturday, stating it was imported from Congo. The patient died at a hospital in Kampala, Uganda's capital. The WHO later reported a second case in Kampala, noting that the two cases had no apparent links to each other and that both patients had traveled from Congo.

Response and Recommendations

The WHO emphasized that while the situation is serious, it does not warrant the same level of global response as the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization continues to monitor the outbreak closely and coordinate with health authorities in both countries to contain the spread. Travel and trade restrictions are not recommended, as they could hinder the response efforts and negatively impact the affected regions.

Health officials are urging vigilance and adherence to public health measures, including early detection, isolation of cases, contact tracing, and safe burials. The declaration of a PHEIC aims to mobilize international resources and support to prevent further escalation of the outbreak.
