Deadly Chikungunya Virus Alert: UK Tourists Warned After Italian Outbreak
Deadly virus warning for UK holidaymakers

Health officials have issued a stark warning to British travellers after a dangerous mosquito-borne virus was detected in Italy. The Chikungunya virus, which can cause severe joint pain lasting months, has been found in the Lazio region surrounding Rome.

What is Chikungunya virus?

This tropical disease, typically found in Africa and Asia, causes:

  • High fever (often reaching 40°C)
  • Debilitating joint pain
  • Severe headaches
  • Muscle pain
  • Rash

While rarely fatal, about 30% of patients suffer from persistent arthritis-like symptoms that can continue for years.

Current outbreak situation

The Italian health ministry has confirmed multiple cases near Rome, with patients hospitalised in the coastal town of Anzio. This marks the first significant European outbreak since 2017 when over 400 cases were reported.

Professor James Logan from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine warned: "This outbreak serves as a reminder that climate change is expanding the territory of disease-carrying mosquitoes. British travellers should take precautions."

Protection advice for travellers

UK health experts recommend:

  1. Using insect repellent containing DEET
  2. Wearing long sleeves and trousers at dawn/dusk
  3. Choosing accommodation with mosquito screens
  4. Removing standing water near living areas

The Foreign Office hasn't issued travel restrictions but advises checking the latest health alerts before visiting affected regions.
