Health experts in the UK have issued a vital public health warning over a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer that can develop in hidden areas of the body completely unrelated to sun exposure.
The disease, known as mucosal melanoma, originates in the mucous membranes lining body cavities. Unlike common skin cancers, it is not caused by UV damage from the sun, making it a silent threat that often goes unnoticed until it's at an advanced stage.
Where This Hidden Cancer Lurks
This insidious cancer can emerge in any mucous membrane, making it critical to be aware of its potential locations:
- Nasal passages and sinuses
- The mouth, including the lips
- The genital and anal regions
- Underneath fingernails or toenails
The Alarming Signs You Must Not Ignore
Medical professionals urge the public to seek immediate GP advice if they notice any of the following symptoms:
- Unexplained bleeding or discharge from any body opening
- Difficulty swallowing or persistent mouth sores
- A persistent blocked nose or sinus pressure
- New or changing pigmented marks in the mouth, nose, or genital areas
- A dark streak appearing under a nail that isn't caused by injury
"The key message is that this is not a typical skin cancer linked to moles or sunbathed skin," emphasised one NHS dermatologist. "It arises from completely different cells and requires a different type of vigilance. Early detection is paramount for successful treatment."
Why Awareness is a Matter of Life and Death
The extreme danger of mucosal melanoma lies in its elusive nature. Because it develops out of sight, diagnosis frequently comes after the cancer has already spread, drastically reducing survival rates. Public and medical professional awareness is considered the first and most crucial line of defence against this deadly disease.
The NHS advises that anyone with persistent, unexplained symptoms in these areas should not delay and must contact their GP for a consultation.
