Podcast host and media personality Abbie Chatfield has opened up about the harrowing moment she discovered her musician boyfriend, Adam Hyde, required surgery for a dangerous skin cancer on his neck.
A Terrifying Phone Call and a 'Giant Gash'
The emotional revelation came during the latest episode of Chatfield's It's A Lot podcast, where Hyde, 35, joined her to discuss his cancer journey. Hyde explained he was in Brisbane recording music when he received the alarming diagnosis.
Abbie recalled her visceral reaction upon hearing the news, describing how she immediately called her mother while 'scream crying' down the phone. 'I did freak you out, but I didn't want to freak you out as much as I was freaked out,' she told her mother during the call. The shock was so profound that her assistant had to physically hold her as she sobbed.
For Hyde, who has a history with skin cancer, this particular carcinoma was severe enough to require surgery under general anaesthetic for the first time. 'It was horrific,' Chatfield said, detailing the aftermath. 'You had this giant gash in your neck that prevented you from even talking.'
A Previous 'Double Cancer' Scare and a Public Warning
The couple also recounted an earlier, even more frightening scare when Hyde was mistakenly informed he had 'double cancer' in his neck. Chatfield remembered thinking, 'of course I found the love of my life, and he has double cancer in his neck.'
Following his experience, Hyde was approached by the Cancer Council to share his story, using his platform to urge the public to educate themselves about sun safety and the very real dangers of skin cancer.
A Strong Romance Amidst the Turmoil
The health scare has unfolded against the backdrop of the couple's blossoming relationship. Abbie Chatfield confirmed her romance with Adam Hyde in June 2024 after weeks of speculation, and they celebrated their first anniversary this past March.
To mark the occasion, Hyde posted a sweet tribute on Instagram, calling Chatfield 'the most beautiful, inspiring, intelligent, sexy, cute, caring, gentle, determined, strong, soft, hard punk, dreamy, supercharged fun, sleepy Queensland witty, stylish, hot and incredible woman in the world.'
The pair have since fuelled engagement rumours, with Chatfield revealing earlier this year that she had already tried to reserve the Instagram handle 'Abbie Hyde'. She frequently shares loving tributes to him on social media, and he remains a recurring guest on her popular podcast, where they have discussed both their romance and his serious health battle.
