This alarming figure represents a devastating escalation of the humanitarian emergency in the besieged territory.
The UN children's agency reports that its critical recovery programmes, a lifeline for thousands of infants, are being pushed to the brink of collapse. A lethal combination of access denials and critical funding shortfalls is severely hampering the delivery of lifesaving therapeutic food and medical supplies.
A Generation at Risk
According to the latest data, the situation is deteriorating at a frightening pace. The number of children suffering from the most severe and life-threatening form of malnutrition, known as severe wasting, has skyrocketed. These children are up to 11 times more likely to die than their well-nourished peers, yet the systems designed to save them are failing under immense strain.
"We are witnessing a tragedy unfold in real time," a UNICEF spokesperson stated. "The denial of safe and predictable access to deliver aid, coupled with a desperate lack of funding, is creating an impossible situation. We know how to treat malnutrition, but we are being systematically prevented from doing so."
Systemic Barriers to Lifesaving Aid
The agency highlights several critical barriers:
