Two men have been arrested on suspicion of fraud and failing to prevent unnecessary suffering to animals after 37 dead dogs were discovered at a property in Crays Hill, Billericay, Essex. The grim find was made during a joint raid by Essex Police, the RSPCA, and Basildon Borough Council on Tuesday.
The rescue centre, known as Save A Paw, had been criticised by dog owners who reported their pets going missing or receiving no updates. Hayley Lucas, 43, drove from Scotland to drop off her dog Frank, a Border Collie Perro de Presa Canario mix, in early January. She said she was promised updates but never received any, and now believes her dog is dead.
Inspector Steve Parry of Essex Police said the investigation followed reports made through Action Fraud. Officers found the remains of 37 dogs and about 20 live dogs, which are now being cared for. The priority is to locate the last-known owners.
Cllr Aidan McGurran of Basildon Council urged residents not to speculate while the investigation continues. The two arrested men have not been named.
