One Household Item Beats Toilet Limescale Stains

Brown stains inside a toilet bowl are often wrongly attributed to general everyday use, but in reality they are far more likely to be caused by limescale — a natural mineral deposit left behind by the water itself. You can spot limescale if the marks keep coming back and refuse to budge with bleach, as the chemicals will only lighten the discolouration rather than remove it completely.

Bleach may temporarily mask limescale, but the underlying build-up will persist and can continue to harbour nasties such as bacteria and mould, making the toilet increasingly harder to keep clean over time.

However, Kristi, a mum and founder of Mom's Confession, has discovered a simple one-ingredient cleaning solution to tackle limescale for good, after growing fed up with scrubbing her toilet almost every single day. She instructed: “Drop two Alka-Seltzer tablets into the toilet bowl. Once the fizzing stops, brush and clean the grime away! Easy enough, right?”

Alka-Seltzer tablets are aspirin-based and contain citric acid, an acidic compound naturally derived from fruit juice that is widely recognised for its ability to dissolve limescale efficiently. They also contain sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, which accelerates the reaction of the citric acid to create a fizzing effect that helps break down the stubborn mineral deposits stuck to the toilet bowl.

To try this method, simply drop two tablets into your toilet bowl and allow them to get to work. Leave the tablets to fizz for between 15 and 30 minutes, after which you can begin cleaning the toilet. Using a toilet brush, gently scrub the stains, which should lift away with very little effort. Finally, flush the toilet to rinse away the cleaning solution and dirt, leaving your toilet bowl gleaming and sparkling white.
