Cameron Norrie Retires from French Open with Rib Injury, Wimbledon in Doubt
Norrie Retires from French Open with Rib Injury

British No 1 Cameron Norrie retired from his first-round match at the French Open on Tuesday, citing a pre-tournament rib injury that has cast doubt on his participation in Wimbledon and the upcoming grass-court season.

The 30-year-old, seeded 20th in Paris, was trailing Paraguay's Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 7-6, 2-0 when he decided to withdraw. Norrie had disclosed the rib issue on the eve of Roland Garros, following an intense five-hour practice match with fifth seed Ben Shelton.

This marks the first retirement of Norrie's professional career, and the timing could not be worse as the tennis calendar shifts to grass courts in the coming weeks. The injury adds to a growing list of fitness concerns for British tennis, with Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu, and Sonay Kartal also currently sidelined with various ailments.

Following Norrie's withdrawal, Jacob Fearnley remains the sole British man in the singles draw. On the women's side, Katie Boulter and Fran Jones have advanced to the next round.

The British No 1's retirement has raised alarms about his readiness for Wimbledon, which begins in late June. Norrie had been expected to be a strong contender at the All England Club after reaching the semi-finals in 2022.

His camp has not yet provided a timeline for his recovery, but the injury is believed to be a stress-related issue that may require rest rather than surgery.
