An intensely moving final reunion between a terminally ill New York man and his two devoted German Shepherds, occurring mere hours before his passing, left an entire room of medical professionals visibly emotional and in tears.
The Heartbreaking Final Wish
The patient, identified only as Mr. Spencer by WCBS, was receiving care at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. His ultimate dying wish was to bid a proper farewell to his cherished canine companions, Bowie and Nikki, while also ensuring they would be placed into a caring and permanent adoptive home.
A Room Filled with Emotion
On January 30, in a coordinated effort with NYC Second Chance Rescue, the hospital facilitated a profoundly emotional gathering in Spencer's room. A video shared by the shelter on Facebook captured the poignant moment as Bowie and Nikki eagerly greeted their owner, licking his hand and remaining steadfastly by his bedside.
"It was an absolute tearjerker, witnessing them become so exhilarated to see their owner," Jennifer Brooks, the rescue organisation's founder, recounted to WCBS. "They settled down near his bed. We remained for a considerable period. There was a room containing approximately ten doctors, and literally, there was not a single dry eye in the room."
Tragically, just hours following this deeply affecting visit, Mr. Spencer passed away. The hospital has chosen not to disclose the specific nature of his illness.
Securing a Loving Future Home
With no available relatives or caretakers to assume responsibility for the beloved dogs, the rescue has now undertaken the solemn duty of honouring Spencer's final request by finding the pair a loving, forever home together.
"I truly believe that seeing him in that condition, they understood they must move forward now, and they are going to discover a new, affectionate home," Brooks explained to WCBS.
Profiles of the Bonded Pair
Rescue staff characterise Nikki, aged 10, and Bowie, aged 4, as a profoundly connected duo. They are described as exceptionally well-trained, affectionate, and remarkably people-friendly. According to a Valentine's Day-themed Facebook post from the rescue, the dogs are housebroken, relish walks and games of fetch, and flourish when near each other and the people they love.
A critical adoption stipulation is that the dogs must be adopted together as a pair. Additionally, they cannot reside with other pets, as Bowie does not interact peacefully with other dogs.
"They are sizable dogs, so being located outside of the city would be preferable for them," Brooks noted. "They possess therapy dog qualities. Every individual in the hospital who approached them received a lick on the hand. They are extraordinarily friendly."
As of the latest updates, the pair remains available for adoption. Interested applicants are required to reside within a six-hour radius of New York City and must submit a formal application through the rescue's designated process.
