Is Your Smartphone Causing Piles? Shocking UK Toilet Habit Study Reveals All
Smartphone Toilet Use Linked To Rise In Piles, UK Study Finds

That quick scroll through your phone while on the loo could be costing you more than just time. A startling new UK study has uncovered a direct correlation between the nation's growing smartphone addiction and a sharp increase in painful medical conditions like haemorrhoids.

The research, which surveyed British adults on their bathroom habits, paints a concerning picture. Over half of the respondents (57%) admitted to regularly using their phone while going to the toilet. For those under 35, this figure skyrocketed to a staggering 71%.

The Medical Price of Procrastination

Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Dr Sarah Jarvis, explains the dangerous mechanism at play. "Spending excess time on the toilet, often distracted by a screen, leads to increased pressure in the veins around the rectum and anus. This is a primary cause of haemorrhoids, or piles, which can be incredibly painful and cause bleeding".

But the risks don't stop at piles. Doctors are now treating more cases of constipation caused by poor toilet posture and prolonged straining, a direct result of being distracted and not listening to the body's natural signals.

A Nation Glued to the Screen

The data reveals a nation glued to its devices, even in the most private of moments. The average time spent on the toilet has ballooned, with many people spending 10, 20, or even 30 minutes scrolling through social media, reading news, or responding to messages.

This modern habit has created a perfect storm for bowel health issues. The study serves as a serious wake-up call for Brits to reconsider their bathroom routine and reclaim this time for what it's meant for.

Expert Advice for Healthier Habits

Medical professionals offer clear, simple advice to mitigate the risks:

  • Leave your phone outside the bathroom. This is the single most effective change you can make.
  • Listen to your body. Go to the toilet when you need to and avoid delaying.
  • Don't strain or force it. If it's not happening after a few minutes, try again later.
  • Focus on fibre and hydration. A healthy diet is the best defence against constipation and related issues.

The message is clear: for the sake of your health, it's time to put the phone down and get off the pot.
