America's Health and Human Services Secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, is no stranger to controversy, having previously made headlines for consuming raw milk and dealing with a parasitic brain infection. Now, a resurfaced interview has shed new light on his daily health regimen, which combines rigorous discipline with some highly unorthodox practices.
A Strict Physical Routine
Despite being in his seventies, RFK Jr maintains a remarkably active lifestyle. He practices intermittent fasting daily, consuming all his meals within a seven-hour window between noon and 7 PM, effectively fasting for seventeen hours each day. This approach to eating gained popularity in the 2010s among celebrities seeking weight loss and metabolic benefits, though recent studies have raised concerns about potential links to increased risks of colon cancer and type 2 diabetes.
His physical activity begins each morning with a demanding three-mile hike alongside his three dogs, covering steep terrain that includes a mile-and-a-half ascent followed by an equal descent. Following this outdoor exercise, he dedicates thirty-five minutes to intense weight training at the gym four days weekly, focusing on different muscle groups each session.
Medical Perspectives on His Approach
Dr. Stuart Fischer, an emergency medicine physician based in New York City, offered a measured assessment of Kennedy's routine. "I agree with part of this," Fischer commented, "but the fasting is a bit eccentric—although it is a great way to lose weight. The gym routine should be part of everyone's life to help build and maintain muscle and burn calories, although probably not as often as Kennedy goes. I go twice a week and that's plenty."
Kennedy's commitment to resistance training aligns with broader health recommendations for older adults. The World Health Organization advises that individuals over sixty-five should engage in at least seventy-five minutes of vigorous activity weekly, complemented by muscle-strengthening exercises twice weekly. This is particularly important as muscle mass naturally declines with age, decreasing by approximately three to five percent per decade after thirty, with acceleration to one percent or more annually after sixty.
Supplementation and Hormone Therapy
Beyond exercise and dietary restrictions, Kennedy incorporates an extensive supplement regimen. "I take a lot of vitamins," he acknowledged. "I can't even list them to you here because I couldn't even remember them at all. But I take a ton of vitamins and nutrients."
Notably, he also utilizes testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), describing it as "bioidentical to what my body produced." This treatment addresses the natural decline in testosterone levels that typically begins around age thirty, falling by about one percent annually on average. Lower testosterone can contribute to fatigue, reduced libido, and muscle loss, making TRT a common intervention for some aging men.
Unconventional Mental Practices
Perhaps the most unusual aspect of Kennedy's routine emerges in his approach to mental wellness. During daily meditation sessions, he revealed in a 2023 interview that he engages in "conversations with dead people." He later clarified this statement, explaining, "They are one-way prayers for strength and wisdom. I get no strategic advice from the dead."
Dietary Preferences and Public Promotion
Kennedy has previously attracted attention for his dietary choices, which emphasize ribeye steak, red meats, and sauerkraut—reportedly to the extent that his wife, Cheryl Hines, has carried the fermented food in her handbag. He has actively promoted these eating habits through the health department's revised food pyramid, published earlier this year.
This combination of conventional fitness practices, nutritional supplementation, and unconventional spiritual exercises paints a complex portrait of a public figure whose personal health philosophy continues to generate both curiosity and controversy.
