NHS Warns Winter Virus Surge Continues, Urges Eligible to Get Flu Jab
NHS: Winter virus surge continues, get flu jab

The NHS has issued a stark warning that the peak of winter illness is yet to come, as new data reveals a significant resurgence in flu cases and other seasonal viruses across England.

Rising Pressure on Hospital Services

Fresh statistics from NHS England confirm that hospital admissions for flu jumped by 9% in the past fortnight, reversing a previous brief decline. The health service also reported that the average daily number of patients in hospital with norovirus and Covid increased compared to the previous week.

NHS national medical director, Professor Meghana Pandit, stated: "It's clear that the worst is far from over for the NHS this winter, with hospitals again experiencing a rise in patients admitted with flu and other respiratory virus cases last week." She added that cold weather is leading to more A&E attendances for respiratory issues and injuries from slips and falls.

Vaccination Drive and Ongoing Availability

Despite the challenging conditions, the NHS vaccination programme has been robust. This winter, the health service has delivered over 18.6 million flu vaccines, which is an increase of more than half a million compared to the same period last year.

However, thousands of appointment slots remain available. In a post on X, the NHS urged the public: "Flu can be serious, especially for older people and those at higher risk. Millions have been vaccinated this season, and there are still thousands of appointments available. If you're eligible, it's not too late to get yours."

Who Can Get a Free NHS Flu Vaccine?

The NHS provides a free flu jab to specific groups who are at greater risk. Eligibility includes people who:

  • Are pregnant.
  • Have certain long-term health conditions.
  • Live in a care home.
  • Are aged 65 or over (including those who will turn 65 by 31 March 2026).
  • Are the main carer for an older or disabled person.
  • Live with someone who has a weakened immune system (e.g., someone having chemotherapy).

How to Book Your Vaccination

If you are eligible, you can get your free vaccine by booking an appointment at your GP surgery. Alternatively, if you are 18 or older, you can book at a participating pharmacy online or via the NHS app. Some pharmacies also offer walk-in services without an appointment, though it is advised to check availability online first.

Professor Pandit concluded by praising NHS staff and reminding the public: "It remains important that people come forward for care as usual and there are still plenty of opportunities to get vaccinated and get protected against flu."
