Health authorities in Florida are urgently investigating a serious outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, which has been connected to a gym in the central part of the state. The investigation was confirmed on Wednesday, 3rd December 2025.
Details of the Outbreak and Response
At least 14 individuals have confirmed cases of the severe pneumonia after being exposed to Legionella bacteria, believed to be present in the water systems of a fitness facility. While the Florida Health Department has not formally identified the gym, multiple reports point to a Crunch Fitness location in the city of Ocoee.
One member of the gym has required hospitalisation due to the severity of their illness. Furthermore, a law firm involved in the emerging situation has suggested the number of potential exposures could be as high as 28 people. In response, Crunch Fitness is fully cooperating with officials and has closed sections of the gym to allow for comprehensive water testing and remediation.
Understanding Legionnaires' Disease
Legionnaires' disease is a dangerous form of pneumonia caused by inhaling small droplets of water contaminated with Legionella bacteria. These bacteria thrive in man-made water systems, including cooling towers, hot tubs, showers, and large plumbing systems like those found in gyms. Crucially, the illness is not contagious and cannot spread from person to person.
Initial symptoms often resemble flu, including high fever, chills, and muscle aches, but can rapidly progress to a severe cough and shortness of breath. The disease poses the greatest risk to older adults, smokers, and people with weakened immune systems.
Ongoing Investigation and Public Advice
The primary focus for health investigators is pinpointing the exact source of the bacteria within the gym's complex water and air conditioning infrastructure. Environmental health teams will be conducting rigorous sampling to trace the contamination.
Public health officials are urging anyone who has visited the implicated gym and subsequently developed respiratory symptoms to seek immediate medical attention and inform their healthcare provider of the potential exposure. The situation underscores the critical importance of proper maintenance and regular testing of water systems in all large buildings, especially those frequented by the public.
