Influencer Dies at 47 After Complications from 'Mommy Makeover' Surgery
An influencer known for documenting her cosmetic surgery journey on social media has died at the age of 47 following severe complications from a tummy tuck procedure. Rachel Tussey, who used the TikTok username @midlifeunmuted and had amassed 80,000 followers, regularly shared updates leading up to her surgery, tagging her videos with the hashtag #mommymakeover.
Husband Reveals Tragic Details of Post-Operative Decline
Rachel's husband, Jeremy, posted a lengthy video on her social media page a few days after the February 25 surgery to explain that she had suffered serious complications and her condition was deteriorating rapidly. He recounted that the surgeon initially informed him the operation had gone well before leaving for the day.
However, while speaking to Rachel in the recovery room, Jeremy noticed something was terribly wrong. "Next thing you know, I look down, and her face is off color," he said. "I assumed it was from the surgery, you know, from a lack of blood." Rachel soon became unresponsive, prompting hospital staff to perform CPR before she was transported to TriHealth Bethesda North Hospital and placed on life support.
Surgeon's Statement and Family's Heartbreaking Decision
In a statement provided to People magazine, Rachel's surgeon maintained that the surgery itself was successful and completed without any complications. "Because Rachel was scheduled to remain overnight, her post-operative monitoring was overseen by staff contracted by the independent facility, not by my practice," the surgeon explained. "I was later notified that her condition had unexpectedly changed and immediately returned to assist with her care and transfer to Bethesda North Hospital, where I remained with the family and continued to offer support." The surgeon added that all procedures at that surgery center have been discontinued.
Jeremy was informed that Rachel had gone six minutes without oxygen and was brain dead. According to the family's GoFundMe page, he made the agonizing decision to remove her from life support on March 5. Rachel passed away on March 17.
Family and Community Mourn a Compassionate Life
The family's lawyer, Bernie Layne, issued a statement to The Cincinnati Enquirer expressing deep regret and sadness over Rachel's passing. "We would like to thank everyone, around the world, who faithfully prayed for Rachel and our entire family throughout this extraordinarily difficult time in our family's life," Layne said.
A GoFundMe campaign was established to help cover additional medical expenses resulting from the procedure, raising $37,565 of its $40,000 goal as of Thursday morning. The page described Rachel as "truly full of life" and highlighted her dedication to helping others, including organizing donation efforts after Hurricane Helene and personally delivering essential supplies to those in need.
Rachel Tussey is survived by her husband, Jeremy, and their three children: Tristan, Alec, and Livi. Her story has sparked widespread discussion about the risks associated with cosmetic surgery and the responsibilities of surgical facilities in post-operative care.
