Townsville Hospital Investigates Serious Confidentiality Breach Over Foetus Image

The Townsville Hospital and Health Service has launched an investigation into what it describes as a serious breach of confidentiality concerning the capture and dissemination of a foetus image. This image was initially posted by anti-abortion campaigner Joanna Howe and has since been widely circulated on social media platforms by various activist groups.

Image Sparks Widespread Anti-Abortion Campaign

A distressing picture of a foetus, referred to as baby Samuel, is now being utilised by a broad spectrum of anti-abortion activists across Australia. Authorities are actively attempting to have the image removed from social media, while the Townsville Hospital and Health Service probes the circumstances under which it was taken and shared.

Joanna Howe, an anti-abortion activist, first published the photograph. She alleges that after a woman underwent an abortion at Townsville hospital, a whistleblower captured the image in a room designated for grieving parents and leaked it to her. Howe has not responded to inquiries or provided evidence to substantiate her claims about baby Samuel, which she uses to argue that babies are being left alive following abortions. Medical experts have characterised these assertions as misleading and filled with misinformation.

Further Breaches and Political Involvement

Last week, Howe also posted a picture of private maternity records she claims originate from the same hospital. These records include sensitive details such as the date and time, sex, birth weight, abortion medications administered, and any maternal injuries. Although patient names were obscured, individuals could potentially identify themselves from the provided information.

Initially labelling the source of the baby Samuel image as a whistleblower, Howe later admitted in a social media post that it did not constitute whistleblowing since abortion is legal. In a separate video, she expressed feeling terrible and like a bad mum for inadvertently exposing her child to the picture.

The image has been shared on websites and official social media channels by groups including Family First Australia, the Australian Christian Lobby, FamilyVoice, Church and State, the Australian Family Association, Cherish Life, Pro-Life Health Professionals Australia, and two organisations directly linked to Howe: Tradies for Babies and BirdFlip.

Political Reactions and Campaign Efforts

Prior to publishing the picture, Howe filmed a video showing it to One Nation leader Pauline Hanson, who appeared to accept Howe's narrative. Hanson commented, I think it's inhumane what they're doing. We've just got to change the laws. Several One Nation candidates, including former Liberal Bernie Finn and Western Australian MLC Maryka Groenewald, have posted the photo and story. One Nation advocates for anti-abortion policies and aims to roll back brutal and extreme abortion law.

Some anti-abortion groups rallied for baby Samuel in Brisbane on Monday night. It is understood that Queensland Health, the Queensland government, the Townsville Hospital and Health Service, and other entities are employing all available measures to have the image removed from social media.

THHS chief executive Kieran Keyes emphasised that they are investigating the serious breach of confidentiality. Howe, a migration law professor at Adelaide University, has faced accusations of spreading abortion misinformation, was banned from the South Australian parliament for alleged insults and threatening and intimidating tactics during an abortion law debate, and has collaborated with politicians to draft laws aimed at repealing abortion rights.

On Sunday, she posted an exclusive interview with Queensland MP Robbie Katter regarding his planned challenge to a gag on abortion debate. Guardian Australia has sought comments from Hanson and Howe on the image's origin and the veracity of the claims. In a previous statement, Howe asserted, The world needs to see baby Samuel's face and hear Amira's story. When we choose to look away from the victims of genocide, the violence continues.
