Greg James has updated fans on social media, saying he is 'not in fit state' to be on the radio as he explained why he was taking a short break from BBC Radio 1.
The BBC Radio 1 star has been missing from his breakfast show for two days now, worrying fans, and he has now revealed why he has taken some time off. Fans may remember a few weeks ago, Greg's father Alan suffered a stroke.
Now, Greg has taken to social media to reveal his father has had heart surgery and whilst he had planned to be back on air today, he updated fans to say he was in no fit state to return to work just yet - but was hoping to be back in on Friday.
Taking to Instagram, he said: 'Hello from my mum’s garden! I wasn’t on the breakfast show today as my dad was in for another go at heart surgery (it’s been a wild few months and I didn’t want to bore you with it all). But here we are. Back to square one. Waiting for news and staying distracted and keeping calm by making water features. All being well, back on tomorrow morning.'
Later, Greg took to social media once again to update his followers, and said he'd be taking another day off. 'What a great day! An absolute hoot in ICU. Surgery was much longer than everyone hoped. Big up my mum and my big sis. And the surgeons. And the NHS. What a gang. We’ve all gone mad,' he said.
'Real talk, surgery went ok but he’s far from out of the woods so I’m gonna take it easy tomorrow and hopefully back on Friday. Plus, I’m in no fit state to be on the radio. I mean, look at me, I’m posting photos from intensive care ffs. Thanks for your lovely messages.'
Greg's dad suffered a stroke earlier this year, just before his Comic Relief challenge, which saw him cycle 630 miles, or 1,000km, across the UK on a tandem bike over eight days, beginning in Weymouth and ending in Edinburgh. 'He really wanted me to do this challenge which is coming up on Friday. He knows that and he knows how much it means to me. It's going to be extra mad and extra emotional now, hopefully I can count on you to be there,' he wrote.
In the lengthy post, he said he wanted to share what had happened as 'life isn't plain sailing but we've got to carry on'. Asking fans to think about his dad, he ended the post asking fans to 'keep big Al in your thoughts'.
