On June 27, van der Bij shared the tragic news on Instagram, writing: "With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy. Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever Loved. Forever our son." The post included a photo of a lit candle, accompanied by a message about visiting a church to light a candle and walking to the playground with their son Samuel, where they met another child named Elijah—a sign they described as a beautiful reminder from God that their little boy is never far away.

The couple already has a son, Samuel Seth, born in 2018. Van der Bij works for a modeling agency and frequently shares personal updates on social media. Gakpo, who joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 for approximately £40 million, has been a regular starter for the club. He is currently representing the Netherlands at the World Cup.
