BBC Sport presenter Gabby Logan has openly discussed the profound impact hormone replacement therapy (HRT) had on reviving her sex life with husband Kenny, a revelation that prompted a characteristically British and humorous response from their son, Reuben.
A Personal Journey Through Perimenopause
The 52-year-old broadcaster first began experiencing symptoms of perimenopause in her late forties. Gabby described feeling like a "lesser version of herself," struggling with significant brain fog and plummeting hormone levels. This physical shift had a direct impact on her relationship, as she became "uninterested" in sex and grew concerned it would "become a duty" for her and Kenny. The former Scottish rugby international has also faced his own intimate health challenges, including erectile dysfunction and a battle with prostate cancer.
After medical tests revealed her hormone levels were "on the floor," Gabby decided to start hormone replacement therapy. She complemented this treatment with other lifestyle adjustments, such as taking up cold water swimming, in a dedicated effort to regain her sense of self.
The Life-Changing Impact of HRT
The results of the treatment were both swift and remarkable. Within just one to two weeks of beginning HRT, Gabby reported that her libido made a powerful return. Speaking candidly to The Sun, she announced, "My libido came back within about a week and our sex life was back on track - even to the extent of having daytime sex."
This frank admission about her rejuvenated sex life, particularly the detail about daytime encounters, naturally made its way back to her family. Gabby has joked that her twins, Reuben and Lois, "would kill her" if she shared too many personal details. While the confession did cause her son Reuben, now a professional rugby player, to blush, Gabby told Closer magazine that he took it in good stride. "He has a good sense of humour so he doesn't get too embarrassed," she shared.
Navigating Family Reactions and Media Headlines
The media coverage of her initial comments led to some exaggerated headlines, which the family found amusing. Gabby recalled on the 'We're Not Getting Any Younger' podcast that news reports claimed she enjoyed "daily romps" with Kenny after their children left home. She clarified her actual statement, explaining she had simply noted that with an empty house, couples are "not confined to evening sex."
She humorously reflected on the situation, saying, "I was totally oblivious to it until about 6pm... 'People have looked at me that day having read that headline', and they're probably thinking, 'She better get home, it's time for a romp'." Despite the media frenzy, she confirmed that Reuben and Lois "thought it was quite funny" when they saw the reports.
Gabby and Kenny, who met by chance in a London bar in 1998 and married in 2001, have navigated these personal health challenges together, emerging with their relationship and family humour firmly intact.
