Em Rusciano Hospitalised with Rare and Dangerous Muscle Condition
Former radio personality Em Rusciano, aged 47, has been urgently admitted to hospital after developing a rare and potentially life-threatening medical condition. The entertainer took to her Instagram Story on Monday to share details of a shocking health ordeal that has left medical professionals perplexed and concerned.
"I'm in hospital. I'm ok," Rusciano wrote in her social media update. "The reason is so fkn ridiculous. I'm the talk of Austin, seriously, if this was an episode of House, I'd be the main storyline."
Understanding Rhabdomyolysis: A Serious Muscle Breakdown
Rusciano revealed she is suffering from rhabdomyolysis, commonly known as rhabdo, a serious syndrome where damaged muscle tissue breaks down rapidly. This process releases intracellular contents into the bloodstream, which can overwhelm the kidneys and lead to severe complications, including kidney failure.
"I've developed something called rhabdomyolysis (rhabdo). Basically, my muscles (biceps to be exact) got so damaged that they started leaking into my blood," the former radio star explained in her Instagram post.
The condition has placed significant strain on her renal system, requiring aggressive medical intervention. "Those cells are in turn putting my kidneys under pressure, so they're flushing me aggressively with IV fluids. I have to have my wee measured every hour," she added, highlighting the seriousness of her situation.
Gym Overexertion Leads to Medical Emergency
Rusciano attributed the development of rhabdomyolysis to excessive physical exertion during a gym session. "I'm ok, but I essentially went too hard at the gym and have caused some muscle death. As one does," she wrote with characteristic humour despite the grave circumstances.
In a subsequent social media update, she identified pull-ups as the specific activity that triggered the condition. "I got the Rhabdo doing pull ups. My biceps are still pretty swollen and I can't straighten my arms yet," she disclosed, providing further insight into her physical limitations following the incident.
Medical Curiosity and Alarming Test Results
The unusual nature of Rusciano's case has made her something of a medical curiosity within the hospital. "Doctors have literally been coming and talking to me for fun because they've not seen this happen to someone like me ever. I'm like a new zoo exhibit," she remarked, underscoring the rarity of her presentation.
Her condition is reflected in dramatically elevated laboratory values. "My creatinine numbers were 45,000, and normal is below 5000. I know pride is the wrong emotion here," she noted, referencing the kidney function marker that indicates severe muscle damage when present at such high levels.
Hospital Humour and Personal Challenges
Beyond her serious health scare, Rusciano shared a lighter moment from her hospital stay, posting a clip that captured an unexpected disturbance. "The man next to me is flat out shaving," she captioned the video showing her nonplussed reaction to the buzzing sound. "In his bed. Sir, no."
This health crisis comes during a period of personal transition for the entertainer. Rusciano recently confirmed her separation from husband Scott Barrow in her memoir Blood Sweat and Glitter, published in October. She revealed that the couple officially and legally separated in November last year following significant personal changes, including an ADHD diagnosis at age 42, an autism diagnosis the following year, and the onset of perimenopause.
"My relationship with Scott changed, which is probably not surprising, because I changed entirely," she explained in her book. "I'm way better than I was when it first happened."
The former couple, who share three children – Marchella, 24, Odette, 18, and Elio, 6 – remain committed to co-parenting their youngest child. "We're still a family, it's just a different shape. We're still very much involved in each other's lives," Rusciano stated, emphasising their amicable approach to separation.
"We just kind of said this isn't working for either of us, and we're going to do this our way. All we really get is examples on American TV of divorces and separations, and it's messy and awful, and there's none of that here. He will always be my family as the father of my kids."
Rusciano's hospitalisation serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers of overexertion during physical exercise, even for those who are generally fit and healthy. Medical experts note that while rhabdomyolysis is relatively uncommon, it represents a genuine medical emergency that requires prompt treatment to prevent lasting kidney damage or other serious complications.
