E.coli Outbreak Expands with New Cases Linked to Raw Milk Cheese Products

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed additional illnesses in an ongoing E.coli outbreak connected to cheese products made with unpasteurized milk. The total number of confirmed cases has now reached nine individuals, with three requiring hospitalization due to the severity of their symptoms.

Serious Health Complications Emerging

Among those affected, one patient has developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a dangerous condition that can lead to kidney failure and represents a particularly severe complication of E.coli infection. Medical testing has identified the specific strain as E.coli O157:H7, which carries an elevated risk of causing kidney-related problems in infected individuals.

This same bacterial strain was responsible for a significant McDonald's recall in 2024 that resulted in one fatality and thirty-four hospitalizations, highlighting the potential seriousness of the current outbreak.

Vulnerable Population Most Affected

Health officials have expressed particular concern about the demographic profile of those affected. More than half of all reported illnesses have occurred in children under five years of age, with patients ranging from one to twenty-eight years old. The average age of those infected is just two years, indicating a disproportionate impact on very young children.

All seven patients who were interviewed by investigators reported consuming products from the RAW FARM brand. Specifically, five individuals confirmed eating raw cheddar cheese, available in both block and shredded forms, while two reported drinking raw milk from the same company.

Geographic Spread and Timeline

The outbreak has affected multiple states across the United States. California has reported the highest number of cases with seven patients, while Florida and Texas have each recorded one infection. The illnesses occurred between September 2025 and February 2026, with one of the two most recent California cases actually dating back to 2025.

Health authorities have specifically identified two products as potentially contaminated: RAW FARM Raw Cheddar cheese and RAW FARM Raw Cheddar Simply Shredded. These items were sold at Sprouts Farmers Market and H-E-B grocery stores, though officials caution they may have been available through other retail outlets as well.

Company Defiance Amid Growing Concerns

Despite repeated requests from health investigators, RAW FARM has refused to recall the implicated cheese products. The company, which describes itself as the nation's largest producer of raw milk, is operated by Mark McAfee, who serves as an advisor to Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Make America Healthy Again movement.

In a statement released Thursday, a company spokesman declared they "100 percent disagreed" with health officials' conclusions. The business asserted that all tests conducted on their products, including those performed by government agencies, have returned negative results for E.coli contamination.

"It's official. One-hundred percent of the results are negative. No positives at retail, from our sampling or the government sampling," the spokesman stated, adding that consumers should feel safe consuming all RAW FARM products.

Regulatory Response and Scientific Context

The Food and Drug Administration, in partnership with the CDC, announced Thursday that it has initiated an onsite inspection of RAW FARM's California facilities. The agency is collaborating with state authorities to conduct additional testing of the company's cheese products for E.coli presence.

Public health experts emphasize that products made with raw milk have not undergone pasteurization, a process developed in the early twentieth century that involves heating food to 161°F (71.5°C) for several seconds to eliminate dangerous pathogens. The CDC consistently warns that consuming unpasteurized dairy products increases exposure risks to various harmful bacteria, including E.coli, listeria, and salmonella.

Vulnerable populations such as children under five, adults over sixty-five, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems face particularly heightened risks from these pathogens.

Consumer Guidance and Contamination Theories

Health officials are advising consumers to immediately discard any RAW FARM Raw Cheddar cheese products and thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with these items using hot soapy water or a dishwasher cycle.

Individuals who have recently consumed these cheeses should monitor themselves for symptoms including fever reaching 102°F (39°C), diarrhea persisting beyond three days, and vomiting. While no fatalities have been reported to date, authorities encourage anyone who believes they may have been affected to seek medical attention and report their illness.

Although the precise contamination pathway remains undetermined, food safety experts note that possible sources include accidental introduction of cattle feces into milk during production. Health officials caution that negative test results do not definitively rule out a product as the outbreak source, as investigators may have simply missed testing the specific contaminated batch.

The ongoing investigation continues as regulatory agencies work to determine the exact cause of the outbreak while the company maintains its position that its products are safe for consumption.
